Match your garage door torsion spring in 30 seconds. Three measurements + wind direction. That's it.
⚠️ Torsion springs store lethal energy. Measuring is safe — installing is not a casual DIY job. If you're not 100% comfortable, call a pro. Never use screwdrivers as winding bars.
1Wire size (thickness of the coil wire)
Pick your size, or choose Measured mine and type it in.
How do I measure wire size?
With a caliper is best. No caliper? Measure 10 coils of the spring (unwound, coils touching), measure that span in inches, and divide by 10. Example: 10 coils = 2.5" → wire = 0.250".
2Inside diameter (hole through the middle)
Measure across the inside of the coil, end to end. Most residential springs are 2".
3Length (coil body only)
Measure the unwound spring, end of coil to end of coil — do not include the cones. Whole inches is fine.
4Wind direction
Stand inside the garage, facing the door. Which side of the center bracket is the spring on?
Why does the side matter?
Springs are wound mirror-image. A spring on the left side of the center bracket (viewed from inside) is a right-wind spring; on the right side it's a left-wind spring. Getting this wrong means the spring won't work.
🧲 Replace in pairs. If one spring broke, the other is fatigued too — do both now, not later.
🔩 You'll need proper winding bars (½" solid steel) — never screwdrivers, never hollow pipe.
